GET FOUND BY PEOPLE SEARCHING FOR YOU!
As with any ‘start up’ there are several one off or larger tasks that need to be started from scratch but, they will ultimately make your life far easier in the long term. Short term pain, long term gain!
When you’re starting your job search, you’ll have to update your CV at the very least just to be able to apply for jobs. There are also a number of things you can do to increase your chances of being found by Hiring Managers, Internal Recruiters directly hiring for companies and Recruitment Consultant’s working on behalf of clients.
Online Job Boards
Be sure to create online profiles on job boards (like 365Jobs), upload your CV and make sure it is searchable if you are looking for work. Some job boards may require you to key in all the information on your CV manually into an online form (we don’t btw), what a ballache… but, it is definitely worthwhile!
Whilst advertising for jobs is one way that recruitment companies attract people to apply for a role, a more efficient and cheaper way to do that is to purchase access to the database of an online job board where candidate CV’s are abundant!
TOP TIP
- Make sure the key information on your profiles or CV’s on each online job board are up to date, and be sure to update or tweak it regularly. Information such as location, latest role, dates of employment are all up to date. Put as much information in as you can.
- Recruiters will often use keywords to search these databases, the location of the role and even filter on CV’s updated in the last 3 months, so they can be sure that someone is on the lookout. If your profiles are up to date, there is more chance of you getting found in one of these searches.
Build a LinkedIn Network
LinkedIn is an extremely powerful tool when it comes to searching or being searched for a role. It’s basically like an online CV so if you haven’t got a profile, get one now and put as much detail on there as you can!
TOP TIP
- Think of some of the keywords that people who are looking for you would use, and make sure your LinkedIn profile ‘Headline’ includes them where applicable.
Get Others to advertise you
These days there is a lot of people out there who want to help others to get a job. One positive affect of the coronavirus is that online communities have been keener than ever to help others by sharing details for them, so don’t be afraid to reach out to your network and ask for help sharing your CV, your profile.
TOP TIP
- You could be creative and produce a video explaining why you’re such a great candidate or a PowerPoint with some examples of your work and ask others to share it. That way, it’s easy for others to share things on your behalf and if it’s a bit different then they’d be even happier to share it.
Don’t just ask your network to share your details, ask your recruiter, as they will generally have many more connections on LinkedIn than you do. If they are reluctant, perhaps you can suggest that they de-personalise your CV and if they have someone in their connection who is interested in you, they will have to contact them to find out your details!
TOP TIP
- The way you represent yourself to the recruiter is the way he will represent you to their client or hiring manager. If you are hungry, and create covering letters, contact the recruiter for updates on roles regularly, ask for feedback on CV’s, interviews etc then when a recruiter is talking to a client, they will likely speak about your drive and determination favourably.
It’s true that there is effort involved to create these accounts, register your details and upload information, once it’s done and wait to be contacted by recruiters and companies and
