WHERE TO SEARCH?
Once you’re identified the role that you’re looking for, the next step is to search for it. Here are our suggestions for the best places to search for your role:
Online Job Boards
365Jobs is the obvious choice but we’re probably a little bit biased. There are plenty of others available, but these boards are all used nationwide to advertise vacancies so, by registering on these sites, you will be able to find and apply for lots of suitable jobs.
Be sure to set up job alerts which is a functionality available on most good job boards. Enter the criteria of the role, the location and any other relevant information and you will be alerted when a vacancy that matches your criteria is added.
TOP TIP
- Set up your alerts to come in once a day rather than whenever a vacancy is added, otherwise your inbox fills up and you end up ignoring the alerts.
- Another option to avoid this common problem is to tailor the criteria of your alert to be relatively specific so you are only alerted to the jobs you’re truly interested in.
Engage a Recruitment Agency or Consultant
Don’t do all the hard work yourself, make sure you get the help of others – it’s free! You can generally create an account online these days, but there are still some in local town centres that you can go into and register with.
TOP TIP
- There are lots of recruitment agencies and some that specialise in different areas, so make sure you register with the right one/s that align to the types of roles you’re looking for. The more specific your search is, the better it is for you to seek a specialist.
Company Websites – go direct!
Although a lot of companies do use recruitment agencies or job boards themselves, other advertise their own vacancies on their company website. By making a note of local companies in your area and checking out the careers page on their website, you may discover a hidden gem that hasn’t been promoted as widely as one that is advertised via an agency.
TOP TIP
- There are probably hundreds of companies operating locally that you have never heard of. Take a look around your local industrial estate and take a photo of the ‘map’ at the front of the park to identify a number of potential employers you never knew were there!
- If you’re feeling brave and it’s a nice day, you could also dress appropriately, take a few copies of your CV in a plastic wallet and do a bit of old-fashioned canvassing around the estate!
